My name is Maureen, and I’m a recent graduate of the University of Notre Dame. My first encounter with Uganda was through ND’s International Summer Service Learning Program (ISSLP) in 2018. There I spent nine weeks living and working with the Congregation of Holy Cross in their missions, especially at Lake View Senior Secondary School. I had never traveled overseas before the ISSLP, and it was a incredibly meaningful experience. My old blog from the summer of 2018 can be found here.
After the community’s invitation and much discernment, I decided to return to Jinja for a more meaningful service commitment after my graduation. There is currently no formal service program for Holy Cross, so I set up the role directly with Lake View Secondary. I plan to spend sixteen months in Uganda (July 2019 to December 2020), teaching English Language classes part-time while also serving as an assistant campus minister at the school. Over holidays, I will be working with my friend Katie Robben for Let Us Move Mountains. My main goal is to make myself available to the mission of Holy Cross and the people of Uganda however I can be helpful.
This is my blog if you are interested in following some of the joys of the journey! In addition to this more public forum, I will have a monthly personal update for my financial supporters. Are you interested in supporting me? I reached my fundraising goal pre-departure, but my GoFundMe remains open here: https://www.gofundme.com/f/support-maureen-postgraduate-service-in-uganda. Any further donations will be used directly for community needs.
What I need more than anything is prayers! And please feel free to stay in touch. Email is great, or iMessage, Facebook, or WhatsApp. It means a lot to hear encouragement from friends and family, especially when I will be on my own. I am extremely grateful for the support I have received thus far, and God’s providence which has made everything possible. “Life with Christ is a wonderful adventure,” as Saint John Paul II says – I’m glad He is coming with me!
